Waterfront Park Design Competition

Providence, Rhode island

New respect for the rivers, and their role in shaping the City, has brought dramatic changes to the Providence waterfront. The relocation of Interstate 195 will make land available for a large Waterfront Park. Through this design we have symbolically respected the past and displayed the means by which we might imagine a future that is based upon the principles of a sustainable world and the new technology that supports it. The molding of the land provides a basic rythm of undulating landforms referencing waves or swells of water, or that might remind us of glacial geologic forces that created the New England landscape. A range of 'social places' serve the needs of the local neighborhood or special uses. The Great Lawn, which occupies the center of the park, is a large civic space and the wide walk that runs along the edges of the Providence River continues the established strategy of engaging the waterfront.
